Our Story
A Historical Perspective and Path Forward
We launched EmergencyHam.net in the post-pandemic era with an ambitious vision: to unite licensed amateur radio operators with users of Part 15 license-free bands, creating a resilient emergency communication network when internet infrastructure fails.
The Original Vision
Our concept drew inspiration from the historical phone patch—where ham operators once bridged amateur radio to the public telephone network. We proposed a modern parallel: establishing a monitored relay network connecting IoT devices and digital messaging systems to amateur radio infrastructure during emergencies, operating independently of internet connectivity.
The Technical Challenge
The core innovation involved integrating contemporary communication technologies—LoRa, WiFi, and IoT protocols—into the “last mile” of emergency communications, interfacing seamlessly with established amateur systems like Winlink and APRS. By providing practical utility through IoT connectivity, we aimed to demonstrate amateur radio’s relevance to younger generations while maintaining critical emergency communication pathways.
The Regulatory Hurdle
We recognized this concept required FCC experimental licensing under Part 5, justified by §97.1’s mandate to advance the amateur radio art through experimental automated emergency sensor networks. This would bridge the legal gap between Part 97 amateur operations and Part 15 unlicensed devices while serving the public interest during disasters.
Where We Stand
Over five years, approximately 20 individuals expressed interest—falling short of the 50-member critical mass needed for viability. Without sufficient participation to justify experimental licensing or build a functioning network, the project has remained dormant.
Looking Forward
The need for resilient, internet-independent emergency communications has only grown. With lessons learned and evolving technology, we believe the time is right to revisit this vision with a refined approach, clearer regulatory strategy, and renewed community engagement.
